I come from one of those families where the mother saw the husband off to work, sent the children to school and sat down to do her sewing. My sisters and I took to sewing naturally. Even my brother was good on the sewing machine, altering his clothes by himself! I grew up with my grandmom and aunts living close by and they encouraged me in whatever I did. The school I went to also helped me a lot. It was a missionary school run by nuns, who gave a lot of importance to embroidery, cross-stitch and dress-making. We had two hours of compulsory sewing every week and I enjoyed every bit of it. When I was just 12 years my mother let me try working on her sewing machine. I have never lived without a sewing machine ever since! After marriage, I have lived in Qatar and in Bahrain and never went to work. We moved to Abu Dhabi in 1995. After spending almost 7 years here I met Mala. She invited me home and showed me the quilts she had made. I was hooked!! I knew that was what I wanted to do! I wished I had met her earlier. She taught me the basics of rotary cutting and encouraged me to join the Abu Dhabi Quilting Guild. Luckily for me, the ‘Follow Jane’ classes were going on at the guild. They were taught by two very competent ladies, Catherine Simon & Louise Monty. I missed two of their classes but caught up with Mala’s help. At the end of the year I had made my first sampler quilt, quilted it on my faithful Singer machine and put it up at that year’s Quilt Show. I was a proud woman that day! Very soon I was gifted my first quilting machine. Since then, I have been quilting and have given quilts away to many of my friends and relatives. My fellow quilters in the guild have been a constant source of knowledge and encouragement for me and I have made some of my best friends through quilting. I am married to a wonderful man who encourages me at every step. We have a lovely daughter who is pursuing her university degree in India.
